Karen has received a number of awards in recent years including a Tamworth Songwriters Award in 2023, the Alistair Hulett Songwriting Trophy in 2020 and the Illawarra Folk Festival songwriting prize in 2017. Her songs have also reached the finals of both the UK and Australian songwriting competitions.  In 2025 Karen was named as a finalist Solo Artist of the Year in the Australian Folk Music Awards.

Karen is writing songs in Namba (Nambour) on Kabi Kabi land. She acknowledges the Traditional Owners, the Kabi Kabi people, who maintain a deep connection to the land and waters of this area and have passed on their culture through storytelling and song for many thousands of years.
